Sumner began her acting career in 2006 with roles in short films, before landing a recurring role as Francesca in Showtime’s The Borgias in 2011. Her breakout came in 2012 with Frances Ha, where she starred alongside Greta Gerwig, earning critical praise for her portrayal of Sophie, a dancer facing life’s uncertainties.
In 2013, she portrayed Patti Smith in the biopic CBGB and made her off-Broadway debut in The Lying Lesson.
