Patrick Bade
ART HISTORIAN & WRITER
Patrick Bade is an art historian, writer, and broadcaster whose work spans the history of art from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. He served as Senior Lecturer at Christie’s Education from 1981 to 2016, in conjunction with the University of Glasgow, where he taught Fine and Decorative Arts as well as the history of opera. He has lectured at the National Gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the Royal Opera House, and has appeared on BBC Radio 3, Radio 4, and Classic FM. The author of more than thirty books and essays on nineteenth and early twentieth century art, his subjects have included Klimt, Renoir, Degas, Mucha, Burne-Jones, Beardsley, Rops, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Lempicka. His most recent book, Michael Leonard: Painter and Illustrator (2021), is an intimate and comprehensive study of the artist’s career. Fluent in German and French, he holds a BA in History and History of Art from University College London and an MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute.
